Have you ever bought a new car? When you decided to buy the car did you see more of that type or brand of car on the road, or more of that colour? That’s your RAS at work! This is like a gatekeeper that tells your mind what is important and to include these parts of the experience, and what isn’t so important. What determines which part of the 2 million hits your awareness, and which part goes through to the unconscious? Some studies show the unconscious accounts for 97% of our minds computing power. Models have been created to demonstrate the size and power of our unconscious, likening it to a iceberg, with the conscious appearing above the water, and the bulk of the ice mass below the surface. Where does the rest of the 2 million bits go? This 134 bits can be further chunked down into 7 + or - 2 (meaning 5-9) things you are aware of at any time. Modern neuroscience shows we consume over 2 million bits of data per second through our 5 senses (sight, sound, feel, taste and smell) but are only aware of approx 134 bits per second. We are now in the imagination age, and leaders that are willing to adopt some new thinking about themselves, their teams and their organisations will be the ones who not only survive, but thrive in this new Quantum world. They adopt a “who knows” approach allowing them to be agile and access required information from a multitude of sources (this is what i call Quantum Leadership) and adopt 360 degree feedback and value the feedback from their receptionist as much as their chairman. They are creators, are focussed on integrating mind, body and soul and allow themselves to be vulnerable. Dr Rita King from NASA has coined this evolution as the “Neuroleader” In this new wave of leadership ideas equal power. The leaders had a “we know” approach.Īs we move into the new VUCA world a new type of leader is needed. The second wave came from the Information Age, where knowledge equaled power, and the leader became a visionary, more people focussed and courageous and the leader gave feedback, but only one way. ![]() They were systematic, task focussed and had a “i know approach” they ruled through fear. The first modern form of leadership was born from the Industrial Age, and the leader was a manager. If the resistance or secondary gain is not addressed the change will be superficial and not last. Vision and action) need to be stronger than the resistance, and secondly the unconscious secondary gain needs to have its needs met in a more resourceful way. ![]() This is often a unconscious pattern know as a SECONDARY GAIN, and two things must happen for this to be overcome and change to happen.įirstly the collective strength of the first three steps (pain. Taking small consistent steps away from the undesired state and toward the new desired state. The person must know what they want instead. They need to decide they have had enough - this breeds COMMITMENT The person must decide they no longer want to experience the suffering, or frustration they are feeling anymore. All steps must be followed, or the change wont happen, or it will be short lived. There is a recipe, a algorithm if you like to change.
